ALMOST A RESTFUL DAY

PCT DAY 30: Tehachapi – Rest Day # 2
Friday May 13, 2016: Zero miles day

Our second zero miles day. The first was in Idyllwild in what seems like ages ago. We had grand plans to stay indoors and rest our feet. This plan worked till about mid-morning when Hammer discovered his phone had stopped charging. So off we went  for a short walk towards the strip along Tucker Street,  hoping to find a phone repair place or a place to get a new phone. It was already hot outside and the wind was also feeling a bit warm. We were pleased that we were not heading out on the trail right now.

We stopped at Starbucks for coffee and while inside ran into a hiker we met a few days ago. Turns out he damaged some toes trying to jump out of the way of an aggressive green snake. And through him we met Larry and his wife who are the Trail Angels responsible for the most delicious apples and oranges we had out on the trail into Tehachapi two days ago. It was so nice to meet them and to thank them in person. Larry we learnt was a Vietnam Vet.

Thank you for the apples and oranges

So after a chat we were off again to fix the phone problem. It so happens the next store we passed was an AT&T. Cut a long story short, we emerged from there over 2 hours later with a new phone. Hammer was a happy man. We still had to buy groceries to post ahead to Kennedy Meadows.  All this was completed and our resupply posted by 5.00pm. So much for a full day of not doing much at all. So now we can put our feet up and relax. An hour later we met Petra (Ironlady)  with whom we hiked for the last few days, for dinner at a local pizza and pasta place. We joined a few other hikers at a table. While finishing our meal a family at a nearby table came over to chat and then offered us a ride to the trailhead in the morning.  The PCT trail magic just keeps on appearing. We are looking forward to heading out on the trail to relax.

Lou-Seal loved the sight of the huge Californian strawberries, which were delicious for an after dinner treat.
