Alpine Way

January 1-6, 2012

So, so very pleased to see the end of 2011, Hammer & I were at Orient Point on the south coast of NSW for a Swiss themed New years Eve birthday to celebrate Cecile reaching a half century.

From there we wound our way though Braidwood on our way to Victoria for the Mt Bogong to Hotham race. We  spent a week camped at Geehi campground, midway between Thredbo and  Khancoban- relaxing, running and cycling the NSW alpine high country.

Crazy weather, extremely warm one day, then cold and wet followed by hot again. We made another  attempt to run to Mt  Kosciuszko  from Thredbo following the lift line to join the trail to the top. The weather got us again as we came woefully under prepared for how cold, wet and windy it was at the top.  We tried this same run last year and experienced similar conditions and turned back midway along.  Unfinished business, I have still not been to the top of Mt Kosciuszko.

Arrived at Mt Beauty on Thursday night and on a gloriously sunny Friday, Hammer and I and Alan walked/jogged to the Mt Bogong Summit. Followed by freshwater swimming and yabby hunting.

At 1985m elevation Mt Bogong is the highest peak in Victoria.  Fabulous views from the top all the way across to the NSW Snowy Mountains. The snow gums are showing signs of signification growth following the devastation of the 2007 bushfires.

Wild and windy conditions on race day,  followed by sunshine the next day and then snow on Mt Hotham on Wednesday. Summer in the Victorian high country!
